Morphological description (show/hide)
massive, flattened | whitish | whitish | uniporal, in small groups on the upper surface of the sponge. | slightly compressible, surface smooth | Radial skeleton near the surface, then confused. Triaenes are disposed radially near the surface. Oxyasters can be found throughout the choanosome. | Ectocortex of spherasters, endocortex of sterrasters. Cortex is ca. 0.5 mm thick. | (min-average-max, N=30) (a) oxeas, straight or bent, 1625-3030-3650 µm long and 11-44-65 µm thick. (b) orthotriaenes, straight or slightly bent rhabdome, rhabdome length: 1625-2741-3500 long; width: 25-58-80 µm; orthotriaene clad: 190-378-525 µm long. (c) anatriaenes, rhabdome length: 430-2247-3000 µm; width: 2-10-15 µm; clad length: 9-155-250 µm. promesotriaenes not observed. | (min-average-max, N=30) (d) sterrasters, usually slightly elongated, 80-93-110x75-85-95 µm. (e) spheroxyasters, rough actines, 6-11-16 µm in diameter. (f) oxyasters I, 3-8 rough actines, diameter: 22-41-65 µm. (g) oxyasters II, 9-25 rough actines, usually with a larger centrum than oxyasters I, diameter: 12-16-21 µm. |

This sample is a small part of a much larger sponge. Only this part was collected and fixed. On the picture we see the upper surface with the small uniporal oscules. The thick section was made in the pore area.
SEM pictures show the microscleres: A'-A'': oxyasters I; B. oxyasters II; C. spheroxyasters; D. sterraster. |
