Morphological description (show/hide)
massive, globular | whitish | whitish | On top of sponge, cribriporal (a few uniporal). | Not compressible, smooth. | Radial skeleton. Very long triaenes are disposed radially near the surface. Oxyasters can be found throughout the choanosome. | Ectocortex of spherasters, endocortex of very large sterrasters. Cortex is 1.5-2 mm thick. | (min-average-max, N=30 unless otherwise stated) (a) oxeas, more than 6500 mm long and 70 µm thick. (b) microxeas, straight or slightly bent, rarely centrotylote, length: 295-364-445 µm, width: 4-6-7.5 µm. (c) ortho- to dichotriaenes, orthotriaenes are more common, straight rhabdome, length: 3500-5200-6750 µm long (N=3); width: 40-74-110 µm, orthotriaene clad length: 210-512-850 µm (N=26); protoclade 280-421-500 µm (N=5); deuteroclade: 70-226-450 µm (N=5). (d) anatriaenes, common swelling on top of the cladome, rhabdome length more than 3550 µm; width: 3.5-15-22 µm (N=12); clad length: 50-141.5-210 µm (N=11). (e) meso/protriaenes, rhabdome length more than 2075 µm; width: 5-24-45 µm (N=6); clad length: 42-131-210 µm (N=5); central clade length: 65-228-520 µm (N=6). | (min-average-max, N=30) (f) sterrasters, spherical to subspherical, 235-260-290 µm in diameter. (g) spheroxyasters, rough actines (difficult to see with the optical microscope), with centrum more or less developed, diameter: 6-8.4-11 µm. (h) oxyasters, thin rough actines, diameter: 10-14.3-17.5 µm. |
